When I selected this play as part of our season, I thought that it would provide an opportunity for us to explore an earlier time period when oppressive attitudes about gender, race, and sexuality were so prevalent in our culture.  In light of recent events however, I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that these oppressive attitudes are just as prevalent today as they were in 1960.  It is my sincere hope that in the not too distant future, this play will finally feel reminiscent of a time period that has long since passed.
