About Me
I believe theatre creates a welcoming space for plurality. Whether it is in the classroom or on stage, multiple perspectives must come together in order to make a lasting impact.
Over the years, my understanding of my role as teacher has encompassed so much more than just imparting knowledge.
As an educator, I work:
To challenge my students and audiences to move out of their comfort zone
To engage with students one on one as an advisor and mentor
To rely on my extensive disciplinary expertise to guide my courses and productions
To push students to make braver and bolder choices
My story of how I came to be a theatre arts professor is probably not that unique. While in high school, I became heavily involved with the Drama Club, performing in numerous productions over all four years. While in college, I felt tremendous pressure to choose a major that would result in a “stable career,” but the connection I felt to performance and story telling was simply too strong.
I majored in Theatre Arts at Stetson University, and went on to earn an MA and a PhD in Theatre from Bowling Green State University. The trajectory of my professional teaching career took me from Ohio, to Texas, and eventually back full circle to a tenured position as Professor of Theatre at Stetson University.
